Nispy - Rick's Amiga Mods
Rick's Amiga Mods
Rick sez: In high school I had an Amiga computer. Back then if you compared it to a PC you would want to set the PC on fire and question what was the matter with the human race. I used my Amiga for all sorts of creative pursuits, not the least of which was writing music. I mainly wrote the music for games, but towards the end I would write music for Nispy and eventually just because I enjoyed it. I've since recovered my old Amiga hard drive and gotten the files off it. So to the left there are some barely-before heard Nispy classics, Amiga Style.

The Amiga popularized a music format known as MOD. The MOD format was created for the Amiga because the Amiga had a 4 channel digital audio chip. If you played an Amiga MOD (not one of mine obviously) next to a PC playing some sound blaster crap you'd probably set the PC on fire and question what was the matter with the human race. MODs were fairly small, only a couple hundred KB, but could sound great because they contained digital samples.

MODs were very popular and when PC sound finally caught up to the Amiga, you could get MOD authoring "Tracker" software for the PC as well. Eventually the format evolved on the PC to the XM format, and you can now get extremely powerful music tracker software such as the massively awesome Renoise, which is what I used to render these out as mp3s.

Yosh It! and Underwear On My Head were written for an untitled, never finished Nispy game. Most of the graphics were lost, but I still have a version that runs. There wasn't a single enemy, power-up or point to the game when I stopped writing it. I was really good at not finishing games.

Unfortunately I lost the Pierre and Yosh sprites.

At some point I started another Nispy game after Ryan joined the band. There was literally nothing to this one except some walking animations. I colorized digitized photos of our faces the best I could and drew cartoon bodies. If you squint you can see Yosh wearing a Rush t-shirt, Pierre wearing a Metallica t-shirt, me wearing, well ok, you'd never guess but a "Die! No!" t-shirt and Ryan appears to be wearing a t-shirt with a smiley face that has been shot.
