Lord of Napkins 1995
Rick sez: This was, for the way we had established ourselves as a "real" band, the final Nispy album. We had played the Jesuit community service dance (to a quickly dispersing crowd) and played our only bar gig: open mic night at the Across the Street bar in Dallas. All of us except for Ryan were college-bound to different places and we wanted to go out with some sort of a bang.
We had a better four track by this point, and Pierre's recording talents were starting to emerge. We were quite impressed at the time with the quality of the sound. Compared to our previous albums, you can sort of see where we were coming from. We pretty much figured out that we weren't going to play shows, and all we were ever going to do was record. We also realized, we may never record again, and the band was probably kaput. We put a lot of love into this album and there are some good tunes to show for it.
"Mommy Hit Me" is one of my favorites. The good-bye theme, "This is the End" is inspired from a number of places, not the least of which is a soft-core foreign skin flick called "Love Camp". The interludes are some of my favorites (forgiving the ones without any sort of punchline) and we first introduce "The Manager" gag here.
The album was EQed and burned to CD at a cost of about $60 for each CD, spread across 6 copies (the band and two fantastic fans). CD burning was amazing and cutting edge at the time, and having our very own CD was as nice a parting gift as we could have given ourselves. I later colorized Yosh's cover art and did the inner jacket art for an online re-release through the now defunct mp3.com.
