Day of the Moron 2000
Rick sez: This is clearly the best sound quality of any album prior thanks to a digital four track, being able to mix everything on the computer and Pierre having some seriously developed skills. It is appropriate, because the theme of the album is the dawning of the new billennium, and all the hype and stupidity that went with it. Computers, technology, communication were revolutionizing the world, but the world was still full of morons. Pierre & I sat down many times to plan every aspect of the album, from the lyrics, the common themes and the game all the way down the the album cover and jacket lining.
Pierre's talents are all over this album like a hobo on a hot dog. He wrote "Last Run" in about 3 seconds after I gave him the lyrics. At this point we began to find our dynamic and most songs Pierre & I wrote together ended up being a hybrid of a good "real" tune and bizarre and sometimes hilarious lyrics. He is playing drums, guitar, keyboard and singing his ass off. "No New You" is also a [lyrics: Rick, music: Pierre] tune and is one of my favorites.
A real treat for all of us was having Yosh drive all the way down from Kentucky to lay down the bass tracks. While he was here, he recorded his 8 part song/s "The Edge of Being" (tracks 6-13). Pierre and I put down tracks where appropriate and we included the whole piece in the middle of the album. It is quite different as Yosh had gone in a different direction musically, but I really like it, "Welcome to the Wheel" and "Smirker" in particular. We got to jam out a bit on some of the tracks and improv a lot, which was fun.
"Fuck Pennies" is our punk song, and one of my favorites. The three part "Day of the Moron" song/s are great, and quickly fall apart. The falling apart at the end of part 2 is fantastic and took way too long for me to get right. Part 3 is an intentional mess. Also, I maintain that "Shhhh!" is a great concept song, but my singing is waaaay off and impossible for to listen to. One day, I will redo the vocals, assuming Pierre still has the tracks.
This was the first and only Nispy album to be sold exclusively online. It was available through the still defunct mp3.com. There are no interludes on this album.
